Kendal sometime referred to as the olde Grey Town nestling in the Kent Valley on the southern edge of the Lake District. The town is the largest town of south east Cumbria a main route centre and shopping centre. Up until the reorganization of local government in 1974 the town was the count administration of Westmoreland though never the county town that privilege being claimed by the somewhat smaller Appleby.

The town is famous for being the birth place of Katherine Parr the last wife of Henry Eighth and for its Mint Cake. The town was a major centre for the wool trade in early days. With the changes to the route of the A6 through the town in recent times the main shopping centre is now predestrianised. Kendal is where the A6 changes from the fell road to the north to the flatter coastal plain to the south The A6 passes through the centre of Kendal, up to recently the A6 ran though the main street of the on however a recent change in the towns one ay system as meant that the A6 or part of its way runs through streets a little further East. A the southern nd of the town the A6 joins the A591 the dual carriageway Kendal Bypass built in the early 1970's. For the first time it loses its identity a far cry from its former glory as the principle road through Cumbria.

The M6 bypasses Kendal well to the east as a consequence of the fells further north and follows the main railway line through the Lune Gorge. As a result it passes no near to Kendal than about 8 miles. 4 junctions actually serve the town Junction 39 the A6 the main northerly junction. Junction 38 the A685, junction 37 the A684 and junction 36 the A590 trunk road the main southerly junction.
