Although this section of the M6 opened from Cannock to Walsall in 1968 it was another 15 year in 1983 before Junction 10a opened. Before this the main way to Telford, Shewsbury and North Wales from the Midlands was via the A5 at junction 12, however to speed up traffic a spur the M54 motorway was built just north of Wolverhampton to speed traffic up and replace part of the A5. As the M54 is only 2 lanes and there is no southbound access the junction is one of the simplest on the M6 a straightforward Motorways merge as shown below:-
